A couple of years ago I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful etsian and talented artist become a dear customer of my shop Ozark Scents. Her name is Merrijo and along with her husband George they have created Absurdious. Absurdious is an etsy shop where Merrijo creates and shares with others her imaginative, fabulous art pieces. Whether you are looking for Stickers, Collages, Giclee Prints, Note Cards or a custom hand made frame for your prints, you can find cute, funny One of a Kind creations at Absurdious. I have used their Gummed-Ups (stickers) and I can tell you they are of outstanding quality and super cute!!

Merrijo and George talked with me a little about their Etsy shop and shared a few things with me about themselves and their creations:

Merrijo is a former first grade teacher with a crazy sense of humor. Her imagination works, she says, “In the zip code of way too much.” She has worked in a lot of different artistic mediums, and is still not sure, on any given day, which medium is her favorite. “What I do know for sure,” says Merrijo, “is that the creative process is a journey that continues to astound me.”

Absurdious was born when Merrijo and her husband, George, first encountered Etsy in 2008. Merrijo stated that this would be a good place to market her absurd artwork, and hence the name Absurdious was born. Because they were in the process of selling their house and moving from Arizona to Ohio, they didn't begin selling products on Etsy until July, 2010. Merrijo does all the artwork, and states “George does all the other icky stuff that makes me look really cool.” George builds the custom frames along with handling all the computer aspects of Absurdious.

“Each day is packed with the unexpected, and we love that the concept of 'fun' is always in our lives as we stretch to improve what we do,” Merrijo stated. George supported her statement that “We both work very hard to make all our art something we enjoy, and we know, therefore, that others will also enjoy it.

“We are open to discussing any special requests you might have,” Merrijo added. “We will do all we can to meet your request, if it is within our abilities.” They can be contacted through their shop at www.Absurdious.etsy.com.

Merry Monday Week 2!

Merry Monday is technically coming to you on Tuesday this week (sorry for the delay)

However, I still have some very Merry finds for you on this Tuesday evening… I hope you will enjoy!

Today while browsing the web for some yummy new cookie recipes, I stumbled upon www.marthastewart.com and I found so many great recipes, but one in particular caught my eye “Gingerbread Snowflakes”!

Leave it to Martha Stewart to come up with a cute and fun rendition to the traditional gingerbread man.

Here is what you’ll need to whip up these awesome cookies:

Makes 16 cookies
6 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup packed dark-brown sugar
4 teaspoons ground ginger
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
1 teaspoon finely ground pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt
2 large eggs
1 cup unsulfured molasses
Royal Icing (Links to her recipe)
Fine sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Directions
1.Sift together flour, baking soda, and baking powder into a large bowl. Set aside.

2.Put butter and brown sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment; mix on medium speed until fluffy. Mix in spices and salt, then eggs and molasses. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Divide dough into thirds; wrap each in plastic. Refrigerate until cold, about 1 hour.

3.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out dough on a lightly floured work surface to a 1/4-inch thick. Cut into snowflakes with a 7- inch snowflake-shape cookie cutter. Space 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper, and refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes.

4.Bake cookies until crisp but not dark, 12 to 14 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks.

5.Put icing in a pastry bag fitted with a small plain round tip (such as Ateco #7). Pipe designs on snowflakes; immediately sprinkle with sanding sugar. Let stand 5 minutes; tap off excess sugar. Let icing set completely at room temperature, about 1 hour. Store cookies between layers of parchment in an airtight container at room temperature up to 5 days.

Yum Yum Yum.... They are almost too pretty to eat!

Holiday crafts are the perfect way to wind down after a stressful day and a fun and creative way to spend quality time with your family.

Here is a wonderful craft that I found at Woman’sDay.com . This activity can be fun for the whole family, not to mention it’s also easy and inexpensive to make:

Simple Stockings

Materials:
Pencil
Paper
Fabric scissors
Felt
Needle and thread
String
Craft glue
Tags and rub-down letters

Instructions:
Draw a stocking shape on paper and cut it out to make a template. Trace the template twice onto felt and cut out.

Stitch the two stocking pieces together along sides, making sure to leave the top open.
Cut out fun shapes from a contrasting colored felt.

Play around with your shapes to create an interesting pattern. When you're happy with the design, adhere shapes with craft glue. Finish stocking by labeling it with a name tag—use rub-down letters to spell out name.

When all of the shopping and crafting is over you’ll want to fill your tummy with something yummy. Therefore, I have found a delightful recipe for some tasty treats that are sure to hit the spot!

Christmas Turtle Candies

Ingredients:
4 ounces pecan halves
24 individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
1 teaspoon shortening 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
Cover cookies sheet with aluminum foil, shiny side exposed. Lightly grease foil with vegetable oil spray. Place 3 pecan halves in a Y shape on the foil. Place 1 caramel candy in the center of each Y.

Bake just until caramel is melted, about 9 to 10 minutes.
Heat shortening and chocolate chips over low heat just until chocolate is melted. Spread over candies and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Freaky Friday Finds!

This Freaky Friday Finds are all about decorating for Halloween or Fall. I found tons of really cute items on Etsy...it was hard to narrow it down to a few! I love decorating for each and every holiday and I usually do (my kids wouldn't let me get away with not doing so) but really I am such a kid at heart and I love it!

I still haven't decided what I am going to be for Halloween yet, of course my girls already have their costumes all picked out though! I think we are going to try to make costumes this year!! Yay!! I haven't sewn in years but I am willing to give it a shot...lets just hope we don't end up at a store on Halloween day picking through whats left because I can't sew! :) Hope you all enjoy!

I am back to it this week! Sorry no Freaky Friday post last week. We had a death in our family and I didn't have the time. Good Evening! Hope everyone is having a great week! It has been busy, busy around here! School is in full swing and so are all the activities! I have been creating like a mad women too!!!

I had to post a few of my new items! I am really getting into the mood for Fall and all the glorious Fall scents! I have managed to add several new ones to my list and today I made a couple and I thought they turned out cute (oh and they smell fabulous too)! I haven't even gotten around to listing them yet!! So you all get the sneak peak! ;) This one to the upper left is (as you could of guessed) CANDY CORN!!

This one to the left is fast becoming my fave!! I am probably going to get sick of it by the time Fall is actually here! It is Gingered Pumpkin and I love it! Just smells sooooo good!!

August already??

Hello there!

Wow it is August already...I can't believe Summer has flown by so fast! Next week my 13 yr old, 7yr old, and my 4 yr old will be off to school!! I will only have 1 child at home with me for half the day!! Our 4 yr old will be going to 1/2 day of pre-school!! It has been a LONG time since only 1 kid was home with me. I don't know what I will do with myself! :)

I know I am going to try to get more accomplished with my shop and blog than I did this Summer! I am working on getting a couple of new things done for this blog and I have started making some fall candles and soaps that I will soon have out. I have this cute bat candle already listed but I have a few more to tackle too. I have started getting in all my fall and holiday scents, YAY! That is my favorite part! I love making all the fall and holiday candles and soaps...they smell so good! Some of my favorite scents are fall scents! I just love the new Gingered Pumpkin scent and the Witches' Brew scent is amazing! I am just so excited for fall and cooler weather! And of course all the trees change color, it is beautiful!!

This fall is also exciting for me because my best friend has joined the etsy team!! She opened up her jewelry shop a couple of weeks ago called wyjajewels!! She makes beautiful jewelry(sample to the left) so if you get a chance check it out! She also has joined the blogosphere if you would like to take a look! She actually posts on her blog unlike me who has been a complete slacker this summer!! :)

Natural Sunscreen recipe...

With spring here and Summer fast approaching, it is time to be outside enjoying the beautiful weather, having back yard barbecues, swimming, playing. I am sure you have heard the saying "laying around soaking up the sun" or something to that effect, but as we all know the sun is not real safe for our skin for many reasons. That is why it is time to start thinking about sunscreen. I do not remember, as a young child, ever being lathered down with sunscreen. As a matter of fact I remember the women in my family "laying out" to get their summer tans and using only baby oil! So, I thought I would do a little research to see if it is possible to make your own all natural sunscreen and it turns out it is.

You only need 3 ingredients to make an easy all natural sunscreen at home: Oil, beeswax, & zinc oxide or titanium dioxide(these are the ingredients that protect you from the sun). You can find these ingredients at many online stores, drug stores and Natural Health stores. You probably have the main ingredient, olive oil, in your pantry and any natural oil will work as well.

I did a little research on the cost of these items and found the average prices for you. Beeswax on average runs $5.00 to $7.00 a pound, If you have a beekeeper in your area you may be able to find it cheaper. Zinc oxide and Titanium Dioxide runs $9.00 to $10.00 a pound. And of course Olive oil or any other natural oil can be as low as a couple of dollars at the supermarket. So for $20.00 you can make tons of sunscreen for yourself and your family. I know one bottle of sunscreen at the supermarket usually costs between $6.00 and $10.00 and these never last my family very long at all. I usually buy 3 or more bottles a summer!

You can find many natural sunscreen recipes by searching the internet, some require more ingredients. I found this one on ehow.com and it seems pretty easy.

To make your own sunscreen you will need:

1 cup Olive Oil or natural oil

1 ounce of beeswax

2 tablespoons pure zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

Directions:

1. Heat oil in pan over low flame.

2. Add beeswax. Stir until beeswax is completely melted.

3. While still stirring, add the zinc oxide or titanium dioxide very slowly.

4. Pour mixture into glass or ceramic container that can be covered.

5. Once your sunscreen has cooled it is ready for application.

**Remember to use caution when making sunscreen, oil is very hot and you don't want to inhale the zinc oxide or titanium oxide either. Be safe and cautious while making!

You can make your own sunscreen in these few simple steps that will keep your family safe from the sun. I know this will save you money too. Sunscreen is pretty expensive and laden with some ingredients I can't even pronounce. This way you know exactly what is in your sunscreen.

I am going to try this recipe this summer! I love making my own products and I am glad to have found this one. Let me know if any of you have tried it and how it went.

Spring is here...

It has been absolutely beautiful here in MO (with the exception of last week when it rained EVERYDAY! ) and I have been busy making my garden and looking around at all the beauty of nature with my little ones. That is why my posts are not coming regularly anymore! :) I just can't hardly stand to stay inside when it is so nice outside.

I am planning a post on getting ready for summer but I haven't finished it yet, so in the meantime I thought I would share some pictures I took from around my house. The two up top are taken from my front yard...the Dogwoods & Tulips are actually from some of my neighbors' yards... this is what I get to look at, they are beautiful!

This is our backyard veggie garden after we planted it. I can't wait for fresh veggies! I will take another picture when it grows some.------------------------------------------------------------------

-----On another very important note...I hope all you Mom's out there have a very Happy Mother's Day Sunday!! Don't forget to do something special for your Mom's! It can be the smallest thing too and they will love it! I have asked my family to forget the gifts and instead clean the house...that is truly the only thing I want! Maybe dinner too! ;) Some of my favorite gifts are the ones that my kiddos make for me, I love their little cards every year! It is something I always look forward to.

I am SO pleased to introduce to you Etsy shop...Huggermugger!!
I met Rachel, the owner of Huggermugger, through Busy Moms of Etsy Team that we both belong to. I am so glad to feature this multi-talented Mom!! As you can see in her shop, she offers a variety of handmade goodness! Rachel told me the word "huggermugger" means "jumble," and she describes her store as a jumbled assortment of different items, which is why she chose that for her store name. Trust me, her store holds something for everyone! She has a variety of items to choose from such as patterns, crocheted hats & purses, sachets, journals, & crocheted finger puppets(so cute!) and I must add some GREAT gift options for Mother's Day! I talked with Rachel (she's awesome!) and she gave me the inside scoop on running her own business and being a very busy mom!

Here is what Rachel had to say!

1.Tell us a little about the person behind Huggermugger? My name is Rachel Kovaciny, and I'm a 29-year-old stay-at-home mom. I live in Connecticut with my husband and our 18-month-old son.

2.How long have you been creating, and what inspired you to start doing this? I've been crafty all my life, and love coming up with new ideas for projects. I make up a lot of my own patterns/designs, and sometimes it takes me several tries to get them right, but I'm stubborn that way :-D My craftiness comes from my mom who taught me to crochet, sew, knit, and do just about everything else. As for how I got started on Etsy, a dear friend of mine has a shop -- Knitsational -- and she encouraged me to start one too. In turn, I got my mom started on Etsy; her store is called TheSquareGrammy.

3.What is your favorite item to create and why? I adore making my collaged journal covers. I started doing them in college, and I dig the challenge of finding just the right-sized pieces for each collage. Plus, I get to incorporate another of my passions: words and writing. And I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing the finished collages come together. It's also lots of fun doing custom collages for people, because I can focus on their particular interests and make something I know they will enjoy.

4.Being a Busy Mom and Business owner, what is the most challenging aspect of it all, and do you have any tips for other business owners/busy moms? I'd say time is my biggest challenge. I can knit or crochet with my son around, but collages and most sewing projects have to wait until he's either asleep or playing with his daddy. As for tips for other busy moms, I guess the best thing I can say is learn to multitask! :-D

Hi Everyone! Hope you are all having a happy Friday! I spent my day planting my veggie garden! Yay! Spring!

I wanted to share with you all that a couple of weeks ago I entered a giveaway over at Midlife Truckers blog for a tote/bag/purse from Olebaglady on Etsy, and to my surprise I won!! I never win anything, this was my first win from a blog giveaway. I was so tickled because I have admired Olebaglady's shop for awhile, she has such cute bags and she's a fellow Missourian!

We are happy to introduce to you Pluto's Gift Shop! I found this lovely shop through Etsy and I was enchanted by the beautiful pieces and all their sparkle. Pluto's Gift shop has been open for business since February 2, 2009 on Etsy, but creating is nothing new for Jennifer because her skill has been pasted down from generation to generation in her family. Pluto's Gift Shop offers a variety of jewelry pieces made with authentic Swarovski Crystal beads. Every item is personally hand crafted by Jennifer.

Here is what Jennifer had to say!

1. Who are you? My name is Jennifer Johnson. My family and I live in Kettering, Ohio just outside of Dayton. I am 24 years old. Currently, I am studying for a college degree in Accounting while working part time at a local restaurant. When I am not busy taking care of my family, working, and studying, I love to create. I love creating jewelry because, it allows me to take time out from the rush of the day and focus on creating something beautiful for someone else.

2. What made you decide to start making jewelry? I started making jewelry as a way to create unique gifts for my family and friends. This past Christmas I made Swarovski crystal jewelry for all the women on my list. After the holidays, with all the buzz about the jewelry, my sister suggested that I start an Etsy shop. I loved the idea of buying and selling handmade products. My shop opened in February of this year!

3. What is your favorite piece and why?

My favorite piece is the Spring Floral Bouquet Brooch. I created this brooch with my grandmother in mind. The first one I made is going to be her Mother’s Day present for this year.

4. Anything else you want my readers to know? All of my products are handmade by me with care and attention to detail. I use genuine, high quality materials. The majority of my jewelry is made with Swarovski crystals! Swarovski is among the best crystals in the world....

I had the chance to ask Wende a few questions about her and her products; here is what she had to say:

Q: How long have you been making your elegant creations, and what inspired you to start doing this?

A: I'm the child of a seamstress, so I grew up sewing. But it took me a long time to work up the courage to actually sell my work. I've made housewares for my own home for years before I took the plunge last fall and started Mireio. As for inspiration, before I opened Mireio I had a vintage store online that did very well. But I found over time that I really wanted to create with the vintage materials that I was finding. I love to mix new with old and find new uses for long forgotten items. So I'm a big fan of upcycling and recycling and refashioning. Creating a new use to something beautiful is a thrill!

Q: There are a large variety of handmade items in your shop from candles to napkins, which do you like creating the most, and why?

A: I must confess, I'm fickle. I tend to love whatever I'm working on at the moment. But if I had to choose, I'd say creating custom orders for people is a real joy. I love listening to what they want and need and then coming up with something totally unique just for them!

Q: What, in your experience, has been the best part about owning your own business as a handmade artist?

A: I've so enjoyed my experience on Etsy--and meeting people and finding new independent artists has been a lovely bi-product of owning my own business. I've had so much fun with it, that I actually write and tweet The Best of Etsy each week. I can't tell you how many amazing people I've met through the process. I love the community it provides. And it's absolutely gratifying to make something you know will be treasured.

Natural Skin Care

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share with you a few natural skin care treatments that my best friend shared with me (Thanks Laura). They are easy to make and fairly inexpensive. Most of the ingredients you probably have in your medicine cabinet or pantry, best of all they are all natural, no harsh chemicals! I love natural stuff, it is good for you and good for the environment!

I will be trying these out because acne breakouts seem to be a part of my thirty-something life now. I have tried several over the counter products which either do not work, or dry out my already dry skin even more, with little improvement on the acne.

Witch Hazel Cleaning

Tonic Witch hazel has long been known to have astringent qualities. The liquid you can find in the shelves of drug store is an herbal extract with exceptional cleansing, soothing, and healing properties. It was originally used by Native Americans, who used witch hazel bark and twigs in many therapeutic applications and passed on their knowledge to the settlers.

To make your own old fashioned witch hazel astringent, combine 1 cup of witch-hazel with 2 tablespoons of alcohol and apply it to your skin with cotton ball. If you are sensitive to alcohol, you can substitute it with 1/4 cup of white vinegar.

Honey and Nutmeg Scar Remover

Another natural tonic is honey and nutmeg scar remover wash. This treatment is meant to help heal the scars caused by skin eruptions, skin accidents, and acne.

To make honey and nutmeg scare remover, combine 1 teaspoon of nutmeg with 1 teaspoon of honey, and mix them together. Apply them to your face and leave them for 20 minutes. Then, rinse it with cool water. Use it twice a week.

Citrus Blackhead Treatment

Removing blackheads can easily be done with lemon. Citrus is naturally exfoliate, which makes lemon useful when it comes to fighting blackheads in your cleansing routine.

Cut the lemon in half then rub it directly on your face before going to bed. You can also extract lemon juice with a citrus reamer, remove the seeds and then add 2 tablespoons of rosewater. Mix the lemon juice and rosewater together and your tonic will be more fragrant.

Happy St. Paddy's Day!!

Last night, as I helped my 7 year old daughter build her "Leprechaun Trap" for her school project, which she assures me she will definitely catch one with, I got a little curious as to all the Irish Traditions of St. Patrick's Day. Although I am not a lot Irish, I am a Heinz 57 mix, so I am sure there is some Irish in there somewhere, I LOVE St. Patrick's Day! You get to wear Green, Drink Green Beer, Eat Great food, try to catch a Leprechaun and I am always hopeful on St. Pat's day...and did I mention drink green beer?? :)

So, What does everyone do on St. Patrick's Day? Well, green beer sounds good to me...but there are parades, and the best part...THE FOOD!! Here are a couple of Traditional Irish recipes I found:

I was feeling very festive this year and I made a batch of Green Clover & Aloe candles!! :) They smell WONDERFUL...not really what I expected but still wonderful!! I am going to burn one today as my own new tradition on St. Paddy's day!

So, on this greenish kinda day I wish all my wonderful followers, friends, & customers a very blessed day, I hope you all see green (in a good way)!!!

Laundry day bites!

Well, it is that time of week at my house to get a gazillion loads of laundry done in one day before the beginning of the week! I HATE laundry, I would rather clean the toilet! I have 6 people living in my house so laundry day is definitely no FUN! You can tell I am a procrastinator when it comes to this awful chore, I wait all week to do ALL of it in one day, and sometimes I do not succeed.

Anyway, I got it in my head to start making my own laundry detergent recently. I figure it will save me tons of money and be better for us. Two of my daughters have mild eczema and so I always use free & clear laundry soap anyway. No fabric softener either, they break out bad with that stuff!

I have found some recipes for it I will share with you all and if any of you have any recipes for it that you love please share with me!! You can find many recipes out there and you can be as creative as you want with them by adding your own fragrances! Here are a couple:

Liquid detergent

1 quart Water (boiling)

2 cups Bar soap (grated)

2 cups Borax

2 cups Washing Soda

Add finely grated bar soap to the boiling water and stir until soap is melted. You can keep on low heat until soap is melted.
Pour the soap water into a large, clean pail and add the Borax and Washing Soda. Stir well until all is dissolved.
Add 2 gallons of water, stir until well mixed.
Cover pail and use 1/4 cup for each load of laundry. Stir the soap each time you use it (will gel).

Powdered Laundry soap

2 cups Fels Naptha Soap (finely grated - you could also try the other bar soaps)

1 cup Washing Soda

1 cup Borax

Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container.
Use 2 tablespoons per full load.

I figure making and using your own homemade soap will only cost you pennies a load of laundry! It will be gentler on your skin and your clothes. You can also use white vinegar in place of fabric softener, which is WAY cheaper and natural!!

The ingredients to make laundry soap are so inexpensive! Example: Bar of plain soap $1.00, Borax $3.00, Washing Soda $2.50. These are approximate costs, but you can make tons of soap for this price!!

So, I am going to try it, if any of you have tried it or use a certain recipe you love please let me know, I would LOVE to hear them! Any comments or tips you guys have are welcome too!

Our next featured artist is the talented mother Amanda, owner of The Cutzie Pa Tutzie Shoppe. Amanda makes the cutest handmade hair assecories, tutu's, tutu dresses, ribbon onsies, and shirts. I was immediately drawn to her products because I too am a mother and I have 4 little girls. I can just imagine my little girls prancing around the house in Amanda's adorable creations!

I spent some time talking with Amanda, she just opened her online shop, and she has agreed to be our featured artist. She has also graciously agreed to a GIVEAWAY!! (Yay, free stuff!)

She gave us some insight into her life as a busy mom, business owner, and creator.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

My name is Amanda. I am a stay at home military mom to 2 amazing little girls who are 15 months apart in age. They are currently 2 3/4 and 18months. I am the owner of The Cutzie Pa Tutzie Shoppe. I have a myspace page that I was originally set up on as my only way of taking orders. I took the plunge into the online world and opened a web page for my business in November of 2008. I took on 2 partners in my business in January of 2009. I figured that it would help keep the business local when we leave Oklahoma, and would help to expand on what I can do alone. We offer a wide selection of handmade hair accessories, tutus, tutu dresses, ribbon onesies/shirts and are currently working on a whole bunch of new items as well!

How did you become interested in making these cute little hair accessories, tutu's and clothes:

I have always been the extremely crafty type but never knew how to move it into something I could make money doing. Shortly after my youngest was born, I discovered that I couldn't find hair accesso ries for either of my children's lack of hair. One of my very close friends had been making bows for her girls for quite a while and she showed me some basics. I was hooked after making my first bow! That was in November of 2007. In May of 2008 a woman I was friends with through myspace posted a notice that she was selling all of her supplies and I decided that it was meant to be. I took over on July 6th and have been having a blast making bows since. I love the feeling of making something that someone else will appreciate and find beauty in.

What is the most difficult aspect of your craft, the business, and/or creating:

It is difficult to not buy new ribbon. I sometimes think that I might have more ribbon than sense! I have so much ribbon that hasn't been used yet and I keep buying more. There are just SO many cute prints and I have so many ideas but never enough time in the day to get them all finished!

We are currently running a BOW MADNESS sale, loosely based off of the March Madness tournaments. There will be 4 bows to vote on every day. Our fresh new look!

Hello again

We hope you like our fresh new face, we did it just for you! Yes, we feel so much better since our transformation, and it actually didn’t take as long as we had expected, but I’m just now posting about it because today was my wedding anniversary! So why am I on here blogging? Well, it’s almost my bedtime, hubby is in bed, and all the anniversary fun and games (wink) are over. It was a great day, love you honey (kisses).

Hey, speaking of celebrations, we are so excited about our new look that we are going to be celebrating it with a big surprise! However, we are going to make you wait until Sunday to find out what it is (ha, ha, ha), but believe me, you are going to love it!!!!

Anyhoo, we are counting down to the final days of the featured artist giveaway, and boy are we excited about that too! We should probably calm down before our faces turn blue and we pass out, but we can’t help it! We thought we would let everyone know that we have marked an official time for the ending of the giveaway on Sunday; it will be at 3pm central standard time. Quick and inexpensive last minute Valentine’s Day gifts

We are now counting down the final hours until V-Day, and some of you still have not got your Valentine a gift. You may not even know what to get your special someone, and you are probably sweating bullets right about now. I know your dilemma all to well, that is why I have conjured up several great last minute gift ideas. So sit back, relax, and wipe the sweat from your brow.

Although these ideas are somewhat of a quick fix, you certainly do not have to give your honey the impression that your gift is not heartfelt and sincere.

Rent his or her favorite movie
With prices on everything skyrocketing it has become increasingly difficult to stay entertained on a budget, renting movies is a great inexpensive way to have a great night in with your sweetheart, especially if you let them know how much you care by grabbing their favs at the video store. Be creative; make a small “Now Showing” marquee out of cardboard or construction paper listing all of your sweetie’s favorite flicks. Place the sign in front of the TV. And don’t forget to grab his or her favorite snacks while you’re out!

Love note card
In an earlier post I talked about homemade cards, they are a great personalized way to show your love, but they can take time and possibly supplies that you just don’t have this late in the game. Don’t fret; you can still make a great personalized Valentine. Now, I understand that writing can be difficult, especially in the love department, but if you truly know how you feel about your special someone, it really won’t be that hard to make a note of those feelings. Step one, grab some printer paper, and get a ruler, a marker (preferably red) or a red ink pen (a regular black or blue pen will work). Sit down and just write whatever comes to mind about your Valentine, write your feelings for them. Once you have done that, look over what you have written, and edit anything that you want, check for spelling, etc. Once you have narrowed down what you want to say, then grab a clean piece of printer paper and your ruler (or some type of straight flat object that will help you keep your penmanship straight and clean looking). Place the ruler on the paper where you want to start your note, write everything out in your best penmanship and then sign the paper. You can title the note (e.g. For my lovely Valentine) Just be honest and heartfelt, and your handwritten note will hold a special place in his or her heart for a long time.

Make his or her favorite dish
If you know what their favorite foods are, then this should be an easy task. Go to the market, grab what you need to make their favorite dish, bring it home and whip it up. Now I know some of you are probably thinking, “easy task my foot” but this can be altered to fit anyone’s schedule or lifestyle. If you don’t cook and have no clue how to cook, then you will need to put more effort into the shopping portion of the task. You will need to find instant, microwavable, already made, or easy to make foods. I suggest browsing the freezer section; most markets will have a rather large variety of semi- gourmet meals for two that can be popped in the oven and ready to go in about an hour. Again, be creative, set a nice table with flowers, buy his or her favorite wine, and grab a quick dessert. Bon appetit!

Note: if these tips just don’t fit your plans, you can resort to the Valentine’s Day norms of flowers and candy; just make it a little less predictable by thinking outside of the heart shaped box. Buy lilies, instead of red roses, get him or her a big cookie with a short, yet sweet personal message written on it in icing.

Remember, no matter how ‘last minute’ your gift may be, you can still make it shine with creativity, personalization, and most importantly, LOVE.

Homemade Dry Skin Lotion Recipe

As we all know the groundhog saw his shadow a few weeks ago, and you know what that means, SIX more weeks of winter! Yes, SIX miserable, dry, itchy, flaky, blotchy weeks. I seriously do not know how much more winter skin I can handle, it has been a bad winter for me so far, and I know that countless others are suffering the same horrific dermatological fate. Therefore, here is my attempt to help as many moisture challenged people as possible. This is a great lotion recipe that you can whip up in your kitchen, and it only takes about 10-15 minutes.

Moisturizing Beeswax and Almond Oil Lotion

½ cup distilled water
1/8 tsp. borax powder (acts as a preservative)
½ cup almond oil
1 tsp. coconut oil
1 tsp. grated beeswax
2 tablespoons of honey
2-3 drops of orange essential oil (or your choice)

In a Pyrex or glass bowl, mix almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and honey. Place the glass bowl inside of a medium to large size sauce pan, fill pan with approximately 1-2 inches of water (do not get water in the oil mixture). On the stovetop heat the mixture on low until the beeswax is melted.

In a separate glass bowl, mix water and borax powder together until well blended, microwave the borax mixture until boiling (about 1 minute)

Pour beeswax mixture into a blender or food processor; slowly mix in the hot borax mixture. Add essential oil, and blend until the entire mixture is whipped (the lotion will appear slightly thin until it cools).

Pour into a seal-able glass jar, let cool, and enjoy!

This recipe makes for a wonderfully thick and silky lotion that is great for dry sensitive skin. Please leave a comment if you have any suggestions to make this recipe better, or post a different mixture that has worked for you.

Here at the Ozark Scents blog we are all about handmade things! Yes, it is true that we love candles and soap, but anything handmade holds a special place in our hearts. That is why we have decided to start scouring the web in search of great handmade crafts. When we find something that is pure handmade goodness, we will feature the product and the maker(s) of the fabulous find here on our blog! You may be asking yourself (or your cat) “why are they doing this?” Well, the answer is simple, we like other people who like the things that we like. Oh, and we are also really nice, and I suppose it is also because we believe in karma ;) So, you and your cat can rest peacefully tonight knowing that Ozark Scents will be running the Google machine and burning the midnight oil (or at least the 10:30 oil) to find you the cream of the crafty handmade crop.

Valentine's Day is creeping in on us and there is but one question on every woman’s mind “what do I do for him on Valentines day?” Girls, we love our men, and they always do greats things for us on this day of love (or at least they try to), so how can we repay them for all of their love and affection? Well, of course there is sexy lingerie, which I’m sure he has no problem with (when you wear it of course). Flowers and candy are really not for the guys (don’t learn this the hard way, just steer clear of these gifts).Then there are guy gifts like hats, t-shirts, etc, but once you have been with your honey for a few years these things start to become Valentine reruns. So what should we do?

You know, I hear allot of people say that Valentine's day is just for women, and girls shouldn’t even worry about what to do for their guys, but I beg to differ, and as a matter of fact, so do the fine experts at Redbook. Yesterday I stumbled upon an article at redbookmag.com The article is entitled "12 Things Men Really Find Romantic"

I highly recommend reading this article, it really offers insight into the strange area known as the man brain, and it should help put an end to your love day struggles.

Here are a couple of things I have done in the past for my hubby; these ideas are great for men or women.

Handmade cards
Everyone knows that something made by hand comes from the heart. So instead of letting the good people at Hallmark write it for you, write it yourself!

One year I was feeling particularly loving towards my hubby, and I decided to make him a card. So, I thought it over (for a really long time) and finally decided that I would create a love time-line. I wanted to let him know how important he was to me by recalling all of the great moments of our relationship, and confessing the feelings that I had on those particular days. So, I started with the day we met, then our first date, first kiss, and etc. I made the card out of red and white contact paper. All together it took me about an hour, but my husband still calls that card the best gift he ever received from me.

Here are some more homemade card ideas from Better Homes and Gardens to help you get inspired

Love coupons
Okay, I know this may seem a little corny, but when I did this for my husband he really liked it, I am talking about personalized coupons. This is a very simple, inexpensive, creative, and sexy way to treat your sweetheart this year. Just think of what he or she really likes (sexually or otherwise) things that you may not do very often, like the dishes:). Then get some paper (whatever color and texture you like) and cut it into small coupon squares (make it large enough to write out your special coupon offer). Then write!

Maybe she would like you to walk the dog, or hang out with her and her friends, maybe we would like you to watch the game with him, or wear short shorts while cleaning the house, whatever it is (be sure its something you are willing to do) write it out as a coupon. Here is an example

This coupon entitles you to one free back rub!

The great thing about this idea is that you can be creative, funny, or sexy it is totally up to you! Once you have completed the individual coupons, staple them together to create a book. You can even title the book (e.g. Your lucky day coupons) Have fun!

Saving money and the environment, it's all in a days work

Here are some great natural housekeeping tips!

To clean glass, mirrors, and even stainless steal surfaces such as sinks and refrigerators, use white vinegar instead of harsh chemical cleaners. Vinegar is a little stinky, but it is safer for your children and pets, and better for the environment. Oh, and did I mention it is CHEAPER too! Vinegar cuts through tough grease, and leaves glass and mirrors sparkling clean without streaks.

To use vinegar as a surface cleaner, pour it into an empty spray bottle ( an old Windex bottle will do, just be sure to clean out the bottle and re-label it before you use it) For best results, do not dilute with water. Spray onto surface, wipe, and your done!

Vinegar also works great as a rinse aid for your dishes, just add it to your rinse aid dispenser instead of jet-dry. It cleans just as well, and it does not contain harmful phosphates.

Quick tip: Vinegar cuts through grease, but if you really want your sink or fridge to shine, use fresh limes. For sinks, get two fresh limes, cut them in half, and rub the lime all over the sink while squeezing the juice out. The citric acid cuts through rust, calcium deposits, and soap scum better than the store bought stuff like CLR. Let the lime sit on the surface for a few minutes, then rinse off, your sink will be the envy of all others. For larger appliances, such as refrigerators, follow the directions above, but use more limes to cover the surface.

Baking Soda (This stuff is the ultimate all purpose cleaner). As you may already know baking soda has been used for oral care for a very long time, but this stuff can clean more than just your teeth.

Baking soda can be used for:

Laundry
·Stain remover: Mix two parts baking soda with one part water to create a paste, apply paste to stains, work in with a rag or brush, let sit, then wash, stain gone, you happy. Yay!

·For really tough stains like blood, and grass, follow the directions above, but pour a little peroxide over the stain after you have scrubbed in the baking soda mixture, let sit for about 5-10minutes(longer for dried in stains) then wash. (for color fast fabric, test a small spot before applying peroxide)

·Whitening: To get your whites whiter, add ½ cup of baking soda to one regular load of whites along with your bleach, you will see a big difference!

Appliances
Does anybody out there have a flat range stovetop? You know the kind that looks like glass, and is very difficult to keep clean. If you do own one of these then you know my struggle. The flat range that I purchased came with a small bottle of cleaner for the top, and it worked great, but then I ran out. So, I thought to myself, no biggie, I will just go get some more, but there was one (actually two) problems with that, nobody sells the stuff! And when you do find it, it cost an arm and a leg. So, for a very long time I was cleaning my stovetop with glass cleaner (Big NO NO according to the manufacturer) The glass cleaner did not get any of the burnt on stuff off, so I was left with a stove top that looked shinny and clean in some spots, then burnt and dirty in other spots.

So a few months after I ran out of cleaner, a bad ice storm hit, my mom and my sister lost all power and had to come and stay with my husband and me for a few weeks. While they were at my house, my mom noticed that I was cleaning the stovetop with Windex, so she asked me why, and I told her that I wanted birds to fly into my kitchen and slam into my stove. No really, I gave her the whole shebang about the pricey stuff. So, she tells me that a mixture of baking soda and water (paste consistency) will work just as well, or better! Then I started thinking about the cleaner that came with the stove, and how it actually looked like, and had the consistency of baking soda and water. So, I tried it, and I was amazed! It worked better than the pricy stuff!

Here is how you do it: Mix 2 parts baking soda with one part water, get a terry cloth rag and work into the stovetop using a circular motion. The burnt on stuff comes right off, and it does not scratch the surface! I am a happy camper now, thanks Mom!

Its great being the sister of a candle maker, I get to be one of the first people to know about new scents and styles, and I get to blog about it all to my sister’s loyal fans. Natural Beauty Tips

Oatmeal, milk, and honey facial scrub.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp ground oatmeal (use your coffee grinder)
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp honey
2 tsp (or more) milk
squirt lemon juice

Directions: Blend all the ingredients together in mixing bowl. Apply to clean face and neck away from eyes and leave on 5-10 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat your face dry.

Tip: Omit the brown sugar and reduce milk to 1tsp. to make a pore cleansing mask.

This DIY beauty formula is great for all skin types, and leaves your face feeling soft, smooth and vibrant. Best of all, you don’t need to go any further than your own kitchen to experience it! Why not give it a try; if it doesn’t work out, then you can just eat the leftovers:)
